1-draw the outline in pencil, you can actually leave it in and not erase it as the style is meant to be gritty anyway. at this point, keep in mind the contrast between dark and light which you will emphasize.
2-use chinese brush. the brush actually gives the roughness: if you take note of yoji shinkawa's style, he uses dry-brush, and that's what i wanted to see if i can apply here. also, as i mentioned before, give emphasis on contrast.
3-my only difference with shinkawa's style is that i have a tendency towards more dimension and realism, so here, you can quite 'flesh out' snake's features. so while i copied some of his style, i retained my own.
4-this wasn't scanned but photographed, hence the blur. i tried to remove it to no avail, so the heck... i just adjusted the color balance with photoshop and gave it more blue, some noise and off-colors just to make it even dirtier.
i actually have the 12' yamato solid snake, which modeled for me.
let me know if you tried yoji shinkawa's style, it's pretty easy... good luck!
